The wine press
Dolarea is one of the oldest roadside hostelries in the Basque Country that still functions as an inn. This building was built in 1611 by Isabel de Lobiano, Lady of Igartza, alongside one of the most important crossroads of the time, next to the Igartza bridge. For centuries this was the main land route between the cities of Madrid and Paris.
In the archaeological excavations carried out in 2007 by the Aranzadi Science Society, the wooden bases of the Gothic wine press that worked at the end of the Middle Ages and during the 16th century were recovered, an old wine press with a technology similar to that of the one in the Igartubeiti museum/farmhouse in Ezkio-Itsaso. The preserved wine press is in its original location, in the cafeteria of the Dolarea Hotel, where it can be visited.
